Whether you are moving or just looking for a little bit of extra space, storage units can greatly maximize your space. When looking for units it’s important to do your research and get organized as efficiently as possible and know what is going into every box if you have to find it later on down the road.

Packing

When you are going through your items that you are preparing to put into your storage unit, you want to organize the items as efficiently as possible. This is where categorizing your items can come in handy. Make sure that you are cleaning those items as well.

  • Wash any clothes that are going into storage and make sure that they are getting some bug deterrent when they are stored, such as mothballs, and being held in airtight containers.
  • Wax and wipe down any wooden items that you are planning to keep.
  • Leather materials should be cleansed with a leather cleaning or gentle soap before storage.
  • Any fabric-covered furniture should be cleaned with an antibacterial agent; you will also want to make sure that the item is completely dry before putting it into storage to help prevent mold and mildew.
  • If you are planning to store appliances, you should wash them with either bleach or vinegar.

Pallets can be used to help elevate anything off of the floor in case of water damage that might seep through from outdoors if you have an outdoor unit.

Create an itemized list of furniture and boxes that are going into the unit. It is also a good idea to label on the outside of each box of what items are going into said box.

Space and Amenities

It’s important to make sure that you have chosen the appropriate size storage unit depending on the size and amount of the items you want to store. This can be helpful when you are planning to store furniture and other large items.

Prioritize the items that are most important going into the unit. Will it all fit, or will you need to get rid of some things. You can always get a lot of things in a storage unit, but it is essential to prepare the best way to pack items inside the company to get the most out of your space.

Some units can even be climate controlled. If you have rented a unit with this option, it will give you a bit more peace of mind to know that your belongings will be kept at the appropriate temperatures. If not, this will have a decent impact on what you might be choosing to store. You will also be able to spend less time packing if you have a climate-controlled unit, as it adds more protection from mold and mildew.

Research all possible units before choosing your space. It is also a good idea to look at the reviews, if they have any, as they could alert you of issues other renters experienced. Until then, happy unit hunting.
